GNATHOLOGY

Gnathology is a branch of Dentistry that studies the functions of the jaw (mastication, swallowing, phonation and posture) and therefore the relationships between the jaws, the teeth, the temporomandibular joints of the right and the left, the muscles that move the jaw and the nervous system that controls those muscles, including the tongue.

Normally it is addressed to an Odontologist in cases of pain in the mandibular or teeth or the oral cavity in general.

What is a gnathological visit?

The gnathological visit is absolutely painless, it is performed with the use of sophisticated state-of-the-art computers, lasts about an hour and provides a thorough medical history and a careful analysis of the dental occlusion of the temporo-mandibular joint. masticatory and cervical muscles, it is important to understand if the disorders are due to cranio-cervico-mandibular dysfunction or to causes of incorrect posture. It is essential to perform an accurate visit that allows to identify a suitable therapy. Very often we observe patients with pains in the temporomandibular joint as a result of incorrect dental treatment, even a single obturation or a capsule performed with inappropriate size can cause painful symptoms, even the lack of a single tooth in the mouth can create very joint problems annoying.

What benefits and expectations do Temporo-mandibular therapy bring?

Once the relationship between the complained disorders and the temporomandibular disorders present is detected, it will be possible to determine the success expectations of the treatment which can completely and permanently solve the problem or significantly reduce the symptoms and other necessary therapies. In this regard, however, the first important result that certainly can be achieved is highlighted, ie the non-use, total cessation or a significant reduction in the use of drugs and medicines such as analgesics, anti-inflammatories, sedatives or sedatives that put a strain on themetabolism and health.

How do you recognize a potential ATM dysfunction?

Understanding and recognizing the presence of temporomandibular joint dysfunction in an apparently "healthy" mouth is not easy and only an experienced gnathologist can highlight it. However, it is advisable to consider its potential existence in all the aforesaid cases such as frequent symptoms of headaches, cervical pains or vertigo ... It is strongly recommended, in a prevention perspective, to periodically perform a gnathological check together with the normal dental visit in order to stop in advance the evolution of the pathology.
